AI-Powered Waste Sorting Comes to Raleigh Founded

The Raleigh Founded Team
9/23/2025

Raleigh Founded is proud to have welcomed a new sustainability initiative, supported by the City of Raleigh: MyMatR, an automated recycling device created by NCSU alumni, John Starke.

With MyMatR, waste is automatically sorted using AI technology, helping reduce recycling contamination and easing the challenges of waste management. Each machine also tracks what’s disposed of, providing valuable insights into the amount of trash and recycling generated.

Not sure whether something belongs in the trash or recycling? No worries, MyMatR will take care of it for you! You can now find these machines at our North Street and Gateway locations.

We’re excited to continue to support entrepreneurs and STEM grads from NC State, in accordance with our partnership with the NC State Entrepreneurship Garage. Bringing MyMatR to our spaces not only supports a local founder’s vision but also helps our community take small, everyday steps toward a more sustainable future.

This initiative is just one of many ways Raleigh Founded is working to make sustainability accessible and impactful for everyone. Check out our recent blogs and podcasts to see how these efforts are coming to life across our locations!
